Robert Blake continues his adventures in H.P. Lovecraft’s Haunter in the Dark. When Robert discovers a unique church across the city, he decides to investigate the reason behind its grim and ominous appearance.
Haunter was originally published in the December 1936 issue of Weird Tales as a sequel to Robert Bloch’s Shambler From the Stars. It is the last known story written by H.P. Lovecraft
The story was dedicated to Lovecraft’s friend and protégé Robert Bloch. Lovecraft passed away at the age of 46 due to intestinal cancer, and in his lifetime was largely unrecognized outside of the pulp magazine community for his works. Today, he is considered the father of modern horror. He and his circle of colleagues helped to establish the “set-up, suspense and shock” format that defines today’s horror genre.
He is most known for his works in the Cthulhu Mythos, which present a pantheon of gods and monsters often originating from the voids of outer space that play havoc on the insignificant members of the human race that chance to encounter them.
As a fun aside, few people know that in addition to his own works, Lovecraft also ghost wrote for others including Harry Houdini. Lovecraft conceived and wrote Imprisoned with the Pharaohs for Houdini in 1924 and the two struck up an unlikely friendship. The duo even planned additional collaborations, but they never came to fruition due to Houdini’s sudden death in 1926.
